Rough Class Schedule and Curriculum
Week-by-Week Breakdown
All students will be given sufficient time and help to complete the given projects, hence the two weeks per lesson. Other activites along the same course of the lesson will be provided for students who finish thier work early.
Weeks 1-2: Introduction to Right-Brain Drawing
- Objective: Introduce the concept of right vs. left brain thinking and how perception affects drawing skills.
- Activities:
- Pre-Instruction Self-Portrait: Students draw a self-portrait to assess their starting point.
- Discuss the importance of “seeing” rather than drawing from memory or symbols.
- Simple exercises on shifting to right-brain mode, such as drawing an upside-down image.
Weeks 3-4: Contour Drawing
- Objective: Develop focus and hand-eye coordination through contour drawing.
- Activities:
- Blind Contour Drawing: Students draw an object without looking at their paper, helping them learn to focus on details.
- Modified Contour Drawing: Look at both the object and the paper for more controlled contour practice.
- Reflection on how the brain processes shapes and forms.
Weeks 5-6: Negative Space and Perspective
- Objective: Teach students to observe negative spaces to create accurate compositions and depth.
- Activities:
- Exercises in finding and drawing negative space, such as drawing the spaces between the legs of a chair.
- Introduction to perspective drawing, starting with simple two-point perspectives.
Weeks 7-8: Proportion and Relationships
- Objective: Develop an understanding of proportion by comparing sizes and angles.
- Activities:
- Measuring and Sighting Techniques: Students learn to measure proportions by holding a pencil at arm’s length.
- Practice drawing objects in relation to one another, such as still life compositions.
Weeks 9-10: Value and Shading
- Objective: Teach students to see and render light and shadow to create three-dimensional effects.
- Activities:
- Practice value scales to understand gradation.
- Shading exercises to add depth to simple objects, focusing on light source and shadow placement.
Weeks 11-12: Drawing Faces
- Objective: Apply skills to drawing more complex subjects, like the human face.
- Activities:
- Study basic facial proportions.
- Practice drawing individual facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) before combining them into full face sketches.
Weeks 13-14: Composition and Balance
- Objective: Understand how to arrange elements within a drawing for balance and interest.
- Activities:
- Explore different ways to create balanced compositions using geometric shapes and simple objects.
- Exercises in arranging still lifes and finding a focal point.
Weeks 15-16: Using Line and Gesture for Expression
- Objective: Encourage expressive drawing through line quality and gesture drawing.
- Activities:
- Quick sketches (1–2 minutes) to capture the essence of a pose or object.
- Experiment with different line weights and styles for expressive effect.
Weeks 17-18: Final Projects and Reflection
- Objective: Demonstrate improvement and self-expression through a final drawing project.
- Activities:
- Post-Instruction Self-Portrait: Students draw another self-portrait to compare with their initial drawing.
- Each student creates a final project that incorporates techniques learned throughout the course.
- Class critique and self-reflection on growth and skills developed.
