For the past four months, I’ve been working on different business related modules, one for each month. This month I worked on expanding my copywriting skills, by applying the things I learned from the last three month.
Essentially, I put my last three modules into practice this month. Previously, I’ve done sales, marketing, and copywriting projects, and this project is a combination of them. Everything I learned from those modules contributed to this one. Thanks for taking the time to check it out!
By the end of the project, I wanted to be working with a copywriting client, or have created specific copy for a potential client. This project will lead you through what I did to accomplish that goal.
Week One
In week one I identified a niche to target–fitness. Fitness, and health niches in general, tend to be popular and need good copywriters. By making a buyer persona, I identified the kind of person that I would be out-reaching to. The persona I came up with was an online fitness coach looking to grow his/her client list with an email newsletter.
To target the needs of this persona, I wrote ten fitness marketing emails. This gave me the benefit of having something to show to potential clients and improve my copywriting.
Week Two
During this week I started outreach to potential copywriting clients. I used Instagram as my main platform for prospecting and outreach. It’s pretty easy to prospect on Instagram because you can see what the person’s brand is by what kind of content they create.
In the first week, I outreached to twenty different people by DMing them a compliment on a piece of their content. I then started conversations with the people who responded and pitched my copywriting services in a short personalized video
Week Three
This week was outreach outreach outreach. I was on Instagram for an hour every day sending out DMs to try and find a copywriting client interested in working with me.
I also had a call with a copywriter this week. She encouraged me to expand my niche to lifestyle, relationship, and other coaches, instead of just fitness coaches. She also inspired me to look into an often-overlooked part of the sales funnel–the cart abandonment sequence.
During this week I also utilized a lead tracker, which had 78 leads by the end of the week. It had space for the date, the prospect’s information and if they were a cold, warm, or hot lead, how many ways I’d contacted them and where.

Week Four
Finally, I complied everything that I did over the month. Since I had spent time learning about copywriting and sales already, it was less of a learning month and more of an application month.
While I enjoyed the process, I didn’t meet my goal of finding a client, so I chose a local business and wrote an email sequence for them. The business is a local fitness studio, called Cycopath, which offers yoga, spin, and a variety of other classes. You can read the emails here.
Conclusion
While working on applying my copywriting skills, I learned different methods of prospecting and interacting with potential clients. While it is disappointing that I didn’t find a client to work for, I built up my copywriting and prospecting skills, which is good in and of itself.
