Recently I have been feeling a lack of discipline in my life. Not enough sleep, healthy eating habits slipping, and too much time wasted on screens and social media. With all of these things in view, I’ve been searching for solutions, and the one that I have fallen upon is an intense discipline training program. This program is popularly known as monk mode.
I discovered Monk Mode from the YouTuber Iman Gadzhi. As he puts it, “Monk Mode is a period of immersion. It’s the period in which you say to yourself and you signal to the people around you that, listen I’m locked in, I’m focused. It’s a commitment to yourself and to the people around you.”
The way you set up your personal Monk Mode, or as I’m going to coin mine, Mastery Mode, is simple. You pick a time period between 21 and 90 days, create 2-3 intentions that you will complete during that period of time, and then set 3 or more non-negotiables, which are things that you must complete every day, or the time period resets.
For my personal Mastery Mode, my main goal is stronger self-discipline and being able to prove to myself that I can be accountable. The time period I have set for myself, (presuming I don’t flake on any of my non-negotiables), is from today, November 13 to January 1. Almost 50 days.
My non-negotiables are fifteen minutes of exercise, only healthy foods, ten minutes of meditating on scripture, ten minutes of Latin practice, and thirty minutes of reading. Daily. If I at any point in time fail at one of these, then my 50 days restarts.
With this, I hope to regain control over my life and have stronger discipline along with the benefits that the non-negotiables themselves bring. There is no better time to change than today. The door is open and I’m ready to start.
