The Buyer’s Journey

Here’s an exercise analyzing a sales experience that I had a few years back.

I was watching my favorite bird YouTuber ElleAndTheBirds, as she was doing a video tour of her bird room. As she showed the different habitats that she had set up for each bird, I noticed a similar theme. All of the cages seemed huge! A few summers back I had bought a grey cockatiel, and while I had done a bunch of research on what the bird needed, I had also got a lot of misinformation. While the cage I had for him wasn’t horrible, there wasn’t much room for him either. This YouTuber I was watching knew her stuff though! She had had birds for years, and quite a few of them as well. Her birds all loved her, you could tell from the videos and her advice was sound. She recommended a cage be 32 x 20 x 52 in. at the minimum.

I decided to upgrade. My search started on Amazon, with a cage that she recommended. This wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, so I continued searching till I found something that fulfilled my specifications. After consulting with my mom and thinking about it, I finally purchased the new cage. It was easy to assemble when it arrived and nearly five times larger than my bird’s previous cage. The problem was solved!

Online

  • How much did you spend?

Around $200

  • How long have you been planning to make a purchase?

A couple of months

  • When did you first start thinking about the purchase?

When I realized that my bird needed more space for an optimal life

  • Was there a particular problem you were hoping to solve?

I wanted to give my cockatiel more room to fly

  • How did you become aware of your problem?

By watching a bird YouTuber talk about how to properly care for your bird. Previously I had bought my bird a  cage that was too small.

  • How urgent and important was the problem you were hoping to solve? How much pain was the problem causing you prior to your purchase?

It wasn’t extremely urgent, my bird was still able to get around in his other cage, but it could have ultimately caused him unnecessary stress.

  • Once you knew you had a problem you wanted to solve, what was your first step? Did you ask other people? Did you hit Google? How and where did you turn to information about your problem and potential solutions?

I started looking for better sizes on Amazon and took the bird YouTuber’s recommendation.

  • Did you uncover multiple different potential solutions to your problem? If yes, why did you choose one over the other?

I found quite a few different cages that could have potentially worked. I chose the one I did because it had a stand underneath it for extra storage, it was made with black stainless steel and had properly spaced bars.

  • What were you hoping the solution you purchased could help you accomplish? How did you feel about your purchase before making it?

I hoped that my bird would have a longer and happier life. I felt the purchase was necessary.

  • Did you have a budget in mind before you discovered solutions?

I did not.

  • Did your budget change after you identified potential solutions?

N/A.

  • How much time elapsed between identifying the solution you purchased and completing your purchase?

Around a week.

  • Did you consult anyone else before making a purchase? If so, who?

Yes. My mom.

  • Did you read customer reviews before purchasing?

Yes.

  • What finally convinced you to complete your purchase? Was there any specific piece of information, customer review, conversation, or event that helped you to make up your mind?

I liked the stand and the fact that it came with wheels so I could easily move the massive cage around later.

  • Did you stay within your budget?

N/A

  • How did the purchase make you feel?

I felt good about being able to have a better environment for my bird.

  • Did the solution work? Did the purchase solve the problem you set out to solve?

Yes, he has a lot of space to fly and more room for enriching toys and perches.

  • How did the solution make you feel?

Good.

  • Would you recommend the product/solution to other people? Why or why not?

If they have a bird or are interested in purchasing a bird that is roughly the same size as mine, I would recommend this cage. Your pet gets enough space and you get undercage storage.

  • Are you better off, worse off, or the same since your purchase?

I’m worse off for the fact I have less space, but overall better off, because my bird is happier!

  • Was the purchase worth it?

Definitely.
